Why Water Storage Tanks Matter in Gambia in 2026

NAWEC – Gambia’s national water and electricity utility – continues to struggle with intermittent supply, ageing infrastructure and depleting groundwater across the Greater Banjul Area. The EIB-backed WASIB project, launched in May 2025, targets critical upgrades to water production, treatment and distribution for approximately 560,000 people in the Banjul urban area, with plans to extend to a further 300,000 new beneficiaries.

However, construction timelines mean that on-site storage remains the most reliable backup solution for households, businesses and farms throughout 2026 and beyond.

Beyond NAWEC supply gaps, a government-appointed task force recommended in April 2026 the separation of NAWEC into independent water and electricity companies – a structural reform that signals just how acute the service delivery crisis has become.

In rural areas, communities depend on boreholes, wells and tanker deliveries with no piped connection at all. That is why buyers across Gambia increasingly treat steel water storage tanks as essential infrastructure rather than a backup option.

In addition, saltwater intrusion along the Gambia River and groundwater depletion identified in the Global Center on Adaptation’s 2026 climate risk assessment both threaten long-term supply security, making on-site tank storage a critical investment for farms, schools, clinics and commercial operations alike.

What size water storage tank does a household in Gambia need?

A household of four to six people in Gambia typically needs between 5,000 and 10,000 litres of storage to cover NAWEC supply gaps and carry through the long dry season from November to May. Families relying on rainwater harvesting during the July to October wet season benefit from larger systems – between 15,000 and 25,000 litres – to extend their reserve through the following dry months. Contact African Tanks to size a system matched to your roof catchment area, daily consumption and water source.

What Types of Water Storage Tanks Are Available in Gambia?

African Tanks manufactures four primary tank types suited to Gambia’s mix of urban sites, rural smallholdings, market garden operations and remote communities. Each type suits a different combination of budget, volume and site access. The comparison table below helps buyers identify the right system for their specific application.

Tank type	Capacity range	Best used for	Why it suits Gambia
Steel tanks	50,000 – 5,000,000+ L	Irrigation, NGO projects, community supply	Handles large rural and peri-urban volumes; built for the long Gambian dry season
Galvanised tanks	10,000 – 1,000,000 L	Households, schools, clinics, market gardens	Corrosion-resistant zinc coating performs well in Gambia’s coastal and inland humidity
Bolted tanks	100,000 – 10,000,000+ L	Remote rural sites, government water points, NGO WASH projects	Flat-pack panels ship to upcountry sites and assemble with basic tools – no crane needed
Sectional tanks	10,000 – 500,000 L	Urban Banjul buildings, lodges, commercial sites	Space-efficient panels integrate into existing buildings where freestanding tanks will not fit

Galvanised Steel Water Tanks

Galvanised steel tanks suit long-term, high-volume storage across Gambia’s coastal and inland zones. African Tanks applies a zinc galvanizing layer that resists corrosion in Gambia’s humid coastal climate around Banjul as well as the drier, hotter conditions further upcountry. These tanks store potable or non-potable water and perform reliably across household compounds, school and clinic sites, market garden plots and commercial properties.

Key features:

• Capacities from 10,000 to 1,000,000+ litres
• Zinc coating resists corrosion in both coastal and inland Gambian conditions
• Food-grade liner options for safe drinking water storage
• Available in rectangular, circular, square, elevated and custom configurations

Bolted Water Storage Tanks

Bolted tanks are the strongest solution for upcountry Gambia and rural sites beyond the reach of the NAWEC pipeline network. Their modular panel design means the complete tank ships flat, transports by road to remote areas, and assembles on-site with a small crew and basic hand tools. For NGO WASH programmes, community water points and large agricultural operations in the North Bank, Central River and Upper River regions, bolted tanks deliver practical, scalable water storage without the logistics barriers of pre-assembled units.

Key features:

• Ships flat – panels transport by road to upcountry sites
• Assembles without a crane or specialist machinery
• Capacities from 100,000 litres to several million litres
• Ideal for NGO water projects, community supply points and large farm irrigation

Sectional Water Tanks

Sectional tanks integrate into urban buildings and compact commercial sites across Banjul and Serrekunda. Their panel construction allows installation in rooftop spaces, basements or tight courtyard locations where a freestanding ground tank would not fit. Hotels, guesthouses, clinics and commercial operations use sectional tanks for consistent backup supply independent of NAWEC pressure fluctuations. Capacities range from 10,000 to 500,000 litres.

Is galvanized steel safe for drinking water in Gambia?

Yes. African Tanks galvanised tanks use food-grade internal liners approved for potable water storage. The zinc galvanizing layer protects the structural steel from corrosion in Gambia’s humid conditions, while the internal liner keeps stored water hygienic.

For communities across Gambia where NAWEC supply is intermittent and water purity is a concern, galvanised steel tanks with certified liners provide a proven, long-term solution. African Tanks provides liner specification documentation on request.

What is the best tank for a remote farm site in Gambia?

For rural farms, smallholdings and community sites in upcountry Gambia – particularly across the Central River, North Bank and Upper River Divisions – bolted steel tanks are the most practical option. Flat-pack panels load onto a truck, drive to the site, and assemble with basic tools.

There is no need for a crane or welding equipment. Capacities start at 100,000 litres, making bolted tanks suitable for irrigation systems, livestock water and multi-family community supply. Contact African Tanks to configure the right system for your site.

Steel vs Plastic Tanks – Which Works Best in Gambian Climate?

Gambia’s coastal humidity, inland heat and strong UV exposure all influence tank performance over time. African Tanks manufactures galvanised and bolted steel tanks that outperform plastic alternatives across every climate zone in Gambia.

Steel (Hot-Dip Galvanised Panel Tanks)

• Long lifespan – 20 to 30 years with routine maintenance
• Resistant to heat, weathering and UV degradation
• Suitable for very large volumes from 20,000 to 500,000+ litres
• Low maintenance with strong corrosion protection through zinc galvanizing

Plastic and HDPE Tanks

• Lightweight and affordable for small domestic applications
• Best suited to small to medium residential use
• Limited lifespan under Gambia’s strong UV and heat – typically under 10 years

For most buyers in Gambia, galvanised steel wins on total cost over a 20 to 30-year period. Steel handles larger capacities, resists the coastal and inland climate, and delivers superior water quality protection. For volumes above 20,000 litres, plastic is not a practical option.

Why Install a Water Storage Tank in Gambia?

Water availability in Gambia fluctuates throughout the year. Rural communities depend on boreholes, wells or tanker deliveries, while urban households in Banjul and Serrekunda experience intermittent NAWEC supply and pressure drops that leave properties without water for hours or days at a time. A water storage tank stabilises access by storing water during periods of abundance and releasing it when supply is disrupted.

Beyond convenience, tanks play a direct role in three areas critical to Gambian households and businesses. First, rainwater harvesting supplements borehole or municipal water during the July to October wet season. Second, agricultural production – particularly market gardens and groundnut farms – depends on stored water through the long dry season from November to May. Third, business continuity for lodges, schools, clinics and construction sites requires consistent water supply that NAWEC cannot always guarantee.

What’s more, the Global Center on Adaptation’s March 2026 climate risk assessment identified saltwater intrusion along the Gambia River and groundwater depletion as growing threats to long-term supply security. On-site steel tank storage protects buyers against these structural risks, independent of utility network performance.

How to Choose the Right Tank Size for Your Needs in Gambia

Tank size in Gambia depends on three things: daily consumption, how many people or hectares the system must serve, and how long the tank must carry supply through the dry season without a top-up. For households of four to six people, a tank between 5,000 and 10,000 litres covers daily use and a short reserve.

Families running rainwater harvesting during the wet season should size up – a 20,000-litre system captures enough July to October rainfall to extend supply well into the dry months.

Market garden operators and smallholder groundnut farms need considerably more capacity. An irrigation system covering two to five hectares requires between 50,000 and 200,000 litres of on-site storage to carry crops through the November to May dry season without relying on uncertain borehole yields.

For larger agricultural estates, bolted steel tanks start at 100,000 litres and scale to several million litres for multi-field irrigation and livestock supply combined.

Commercial operations – hotels, guesthouses, clinics and schools – typically need between 20,000 and 250,000 litres depending on daily throughput and the reliability of their NAWEC connection.

The capacity ranges listed below give a useful starting point. A general rule: oversize by 20% above your calculated daily need. The additional capacity costs far less upfront than installing a second tank later.

Capacity options available:

• 30,000 litres (7,926 gallons)
• 50,000 litres (13,209 gallons)
• 75,000 litres (19,813 gallons)
• 100,000 litres (26,418 gallons)
• 250,000 litres (66,043 gallons)
• 500,000 litres (132,086 gallons)

2026 Buyer Considerations for Water Storage Tanks in Gambia

Consideration	What to think about
Daily water demand	Base tank size on peak-use days, not average consumption
Water source type	NAWEC connection, borehole, harvested rainwater, or tanker delivery – each affects inlet sizing and volume planning
Potable vs non-potable use	Potable storage requires food-grade certified coatings and liners
Dry season duration	The November to May dry season is six months long – size for the full period, not a few weeks
Saltwater intrusion risk	Sites near the Gambia River or coast face groundwater salinity – surface tank storage reduces dependence on affected boreholes
Location and road access	Upcountry sites need bolted flat-pack panels; urban Banjul sites suit sectional or galvanised tanks
Expansion plans	Oversize by 20% now – adding a second tank later costs significantly more than sizing correctly upfront
Budget vs lifespan	Galvanized steel outlasts plastic by 20 to 30 years – calculate total cost over the working life, not just upfront price
Installation support	Confirm the supplier provides delivery, on-site guidance and after-sales support

Galvanised tanks for household use carry a lower price than large bolted agricultural or municipal systems. African Tanks provides itemised quotes on request – contact the team with your required capacity, intended use and site location to receive accurate pricing.

What size water tank do I need for a market garden in Gambia?

Market garden operators in Gambia typically need between 20,000 and 100,000 litres of on-site storage, depending on the irrigated area and the length of the dry season they need to cover.

Larger plots of five hectares or more require bolted steel tanks starting at 100,000 litres to maintain consistent irrigation from November through to May. African Tanks can configure a system matched to your plot size, crop type and dry-season duration.

Are galvanised tanks safe for drinking water in Gambia?

Yes. African Tanks galvanised tanks use food-grade internal liners approved for potable water storage. The zinc galvanizing layer protects the outer steel from corrosion in Gambia’s coastal and inland climate, while the liner keeps stored water hygienic and free from metallic contamination.

For communities and households across Gambia where water purity is a daily concern, galvanised steel with a certified liner is a reliable, long-term solution.

How long do steel water tanks last in Gambia’s climate?

Properly maintained galvanised and bolted steel tanks last between 20 and 30 years in Gambia’s climate. The zinc coating resists corrosion in both the coastal humidity around Banjul and the drier, UV-intensive conditions further upcountry.

Routine maintenance such as annual inspection, seal checks and periodic flushing extends tank life well beyond the standard warranty period.

What is the best water tank for a remote site in Gambia?

Bolted steel tanks are the best choice for upcountry and remote sites in Gambia – particularly across the North Bank, Central River and Upper River Divisions.

Their flat-pack panel design allows transport by road to locations that larger pre-assembled units cannot reach. A small crew assembles the tank on-site with basic tools. Capacities start at 100,000 litres and scale to multi-million-litre systems for community water supply and large farm irrigation.

What is a bolted water tank and how does it work?

A bolted water tank consists of factory-cut galvanised or epoxy-coated steel panels that bolt together on-site using standard hardware. The modular design allows the complete tank to ship flat in a standard container, travel by road to remote Gambian sites, and assemble in the field without welding or specialist machinery.

Bolted tanks suit NGO water projects, community supply points and large agricultural operations across upcountry Gambia where large pre-assembled tanks cannot reach. Capacities range from 100,000 litres to over 10,000,000 litres.

Can water tanks handle Gambia’s coastal humidity?

Yes. African Tanks galvanised steel tanks apply a zinc coating specifically designed to resist corrosion in humid coastal conditions like those found across the Greater Banjul Area and the coastline towards Kartong.

The zinc galvanizing provides active corrosion protection that plastic tanks and uncoated steel cannot match. For sites in the most exposed coastal positions, African Tanks can advise on liner and coating specifications that extend working life in salt-air environments.

How does rainwater harvesting work with steel tanks in Gambia?

A steel tank connects to the property’s roof gutter system via a sealed inlet pipe. During Gambia’s July to October wet season, rainfall runs off the roof, passes through a first-flush diverter to remove debris, and collects in the tank.

The stored water then serves the household or farm through the dry season. Galvanised tanks from 10,000 to 100,000 litres suit household and smallholder harvesting. Bolted tanks suit larger community or estate-scale collection where wet-season volumes are high enough to fill multi-hundred-thousand-litre systems.

How important is water storage in Gambia in 2026?

Water storage is more important in Gambia in 2026 than at any previous point. NAWEC continues to struggle with intermittent supply, ageing infrastructure and depleting groundwater across the Greater Banjul Area.

The government’s April 2026 task force recommendation to split NAWEC into separate water and electricity companies signals just how serious the structural service delivery crisis has become. The EIB-backed WASIB project targets improved supply for approximately 560,000 people in greater Banjul, but construction timelines mean on-site storage remains the most reliable solution for households, farms and businesses right now.

What tank size provides effective backup supply during NAWEC outages in Gambia?

For households in Banjul and Serrekunda experiencing regular NAWEC supply interruptions, a minimum of 10,000 litres of on-site storage provides three to five days of backup for a family of five. Commercial operations, clinics and schools that cannot afford downtime should target 30,000 to 100,000 litres of reserve.

African Tanks sizes systems to match daily consumption and the typical duration of NAWEC outages at the specific site – contact the team for a recommendation.

Are steel tanks better than plastic for long-term water security in Gambia?

Steel tanks significantly outperform plastic for long-term water security in Gambia. Galvanised and bolted steel tanks last 20 to 30 years in Gambia’s climate, while plastic tanks typically degrade within 10 years under UV exposure and the coastal heat stress around Banjul.

Steel also handles much larger capacities – volumes above 20,000 litres are not practical in plastic. For households, market garden farms and community projects that need reliable storage for decades rather than years, galvanised steel is the stronger investment.

What is the lifespan of a galvanised water tank in Gambia’s climate?

A well-maintained galvanised water tank lasts between 20 and 30 years in Gambia’s climate. The zinc galvanizing layer provides active corrosion protection across both the coastal humidity of the Greater Banjul Area and the drier, UV-intensive upcountry regions.

Annual inspection, periodic flushing and seal maintenance extend working life further. African Tanks supplies warranty-protected tanks and provides maintenance guidance to help buyers maximise the return on their investment across the full working life of the system.

How do water storage tanks support farming and irrigation in Gambia?

Gambia’s farming sector faces a predictable dry season from November to May each year – six months when rainfall stops entirely and surface water becomes scarce.

On-site steel tanks allow market garden operators and groundnut farmers to store wet-season rainfall and NAWEC or borehole water during the rainy months, then draw on that reserve for irrigation through the dry season.

Bolted tanks scale to the volumes that larger estates need, while galvanised tanks suit smallholder plots and household gardens. Consistent on-site storage directly reduces dry-season crop losses and reduces dependence on increasingly depleted borehole supplies.
