The best water storage tanks in Mauritius are galvanized steel and bolted modular tanks suited to the island’s coastal humidity, cyclone-season rainfall and severe CWA supply rationing. African Tanks supplies corrosion-resistant galvanized and bolted steel tanks from 10,000 litres to over 1,000,000 litres, suitable for households, hotels, sugar farms and commercial properties across Mauritius.

Why Water Storage Tanks in Mauritius Matter in 2026

Mauritius is facing the most serious water crisis in its modern history. In early 2025, the Central Water Authority (CWA) introduced strict rationing after reservoir levels dropped to 41% of capacity, down from 92% the year before. In Port Louis, residents received water for only 4 to 12 hours per day, while households in the south and east were limited to as little as three hours daily. The government declared a Phase 2 water emergency and imposed fines of up to MUR 50,000 for non-essential use.

However, this crisis reflects a deeper structural issue. Rainfall has declined by around 8% over the past decade, reducing runoff and aquifer recharge. At the same time, the CWA loses approximately 62% of treated water through leaks and inefficiencies, meaning less than 40 litres reach consumers for every 100 litres produced. As a result, water storage tanks in Mauritius have become essential, as households, farms, hotels, and businesses cannot rely on the public supply alone.

Beyond drought, cyclone-season flooding creates both risk and opportunity. Mauritius receives intense rainfall between November and April. Therefore, large-capacity tanks allow buyers to harvest and store this water for use during the October–December dry period, converting excess rainfall into a reliable reserve.

Each tank provides a clean environment for storing potable or grey water. African Tank Systems specialises in custom bulk storage solutions designed for long-term durability in coastal and tropical conditions.

Water scarcity is a global issue, affecting around 2.8 billion people annually, with over 1.2 billion lacking access to safe drinking water. In this context, investing in reliable water storage is no longer optional, but a practical step toward long-term water security in Mauritius.

Rainwater Harvesting and Emergency Water Storage for Mauritius

African Tank Systems provides portable and fixed water storage solutions ideal for areas in Mauritius affected by CWA rationing and dry-season shortages. Emergency water storage through rainwater harvesting gives households and businesses a reliable supply that does not depend on the CWA distribution network.

In residential areas and small farming communities across Mauritius, harvested rainwater supplements or replaces mains supply during restrictions. Stored rainwater collected during cyclone-season downpours supports households through the dry months of October to December. Stored water suits:

• Drinking and cooking once filtered and treated
• Bathing and personal hygiene
• Laundry
• Flushing toilets
• Garden and lawn irrigation
• Livestock and small-farm use

African Tank water storage systems offer an easy, cost-effective way to save water at a fraction of the cost of trucked delivery. This is an affordable, warranty-protected solution for long or short-term water storage in Mauritius.

Water Storage Tank Types Available in Mauritius

African Tanks supplies four main tank types to buyers in Mauritius. Each type addresses a different combination of site constraints, volume requirements and budget. In a market where CWA rationing has made every stored litre valuable, choosing the right tank type – one that maximises storage for your site’s footprint and fills efficiently from available sources – is as important as the capacity decision itself.

Galvanized Water Tanks in Mauritius

Galvanized steel tanks are the most widely chosen option for households, small hotels, schools and commercial properties across Mauritius. Zinc galvanizing protects the steel against corrosion from the island’s coastal humidity and tropical rainfall – conditions that degrade plain steel and plastic tanks far faster than the manufacturers’ warranties cover. Beyond that protection, food-grade inner coatings keep stored water safe for drinking, which matters when households store water through multi-day CWA rationing periods.

Available from 10,000 litres to over 1,000,000 litres, galvanized tanks give Mauritius buyers a long-lasting, corrosion-resistant solution at a cost that pays back quickly against rising water trucking prices. For a household in the south or east of the island receiving just three hours of CWA supply daily, a 20,000 to 50,000 litre galvanized tank transforms an emergency into a managed situation.

What size tank does a household in Port Louis need during CWA rationing?

A household of four to six people in Port Louis currently receiving four to twelve hours of CWA supply daily needs a tank of at least 20,000 to 50,000 litres to maintain normal daily use through a 24-hour gap in supply.

Households in the south and east receiving only three hours daily should size up to 50,000 to 100,000 litres to cover a comfortable two-to-three-day buffer. African Tanks calculates the right capacity based on your household size, daily consumption and CWA supply schedule. Contact us for a free sizing consultation.

Steel Tanks in Mauritius

Steel tanks suit high-volume storage for sugar cane estates, resort complexes, industrial facilities and large commercial properties.

African Tanks builds custom steel tanks from 50,000 litres upward – through to several million litres for estate-scale irrigation and resort water systems. Sugar cane, Mauritius’s historic primary crop, demands sustained irrigation through the dry season.

A large steel tank on a sugar estate holds enough water to protect the crop through October, November and December without depending on CWA allocation.

Tourism is equally water-intensive. A mid-size resort in Grand Baie or Bel Ombre serving 200 to 400 guests daily consumes enormous volumes of water for rooms, pools, restaurants and landscaping.

With CWA supply unreliable across the island, resort operators who invest in large steel storage tanks protect their guests’ experience and their business reputation regardless of the national supply situation.

Bolted Water Tanks in Mauritius

Bolted tanks solve the site access and large-volume challenges that many Mauritius buyers face.

The panels ship flat by container from South Africa to Port Louis, then transport by truck to any location on the island. On-site assembly uses basic hand tools – no crane, no specialist contractor, and no disruption to surrounding buildings or gardens.

This makes bolted water tanks in Mauritius the practical choice for sugar estates with constrained vehicle access, hillside resort sites, and large residential developments where a single-piece tank could not be craned into position.

Bolted systems scale from 100,000 litres to over 10,000,000 litres. Beyond that, the modular design means buyers can add panels to expand capacity later as the water situation develops – without replacing the entire tank structure.

Is galvanized steel safe for drinking water in Mauritius?

Yes. Galvanized tanks from African Tanks use food-grade inner coatings and liners that meet potable water storage standards.

The zinc galvanizing protects the exterior from Mauritius’s coastal humidity and cyclone-season rainfall, while the food-grade interior lining keeps stored water clean and safe for drinking throughout the tank’s working life.

For households storing CWA supply or harvested rainwater through multi-day rationing periods, this combination of external corrosion protection and internal hygiene is exactly what island conditions require.

Sectional Water Tanks in Mauritius

Sectional tanks suit buyers in Port Louis apartments, boutique hotels and urban commercial buildings who need compact backup storage that integrates with an existing structure.

The sectional design fits precisely into confined plant rooms, rooftops and basement utility spaces where a circular or bolted tank would not physically work. In a city where CWA rationing already restricts supply to four to twelve hours daily, a sectional tank holding 10,000 to 100,000 litres gives commercial operators a seamless, invisible backup that keeps business running through every restriction period.

Water Storage Applications in Mauritius

Water storage tanks in Mauritius now serve buyers across every sector of the economy. The CWA crisis has accelerated investment in private storage across households, hospitality, agriculture and industry alike. Every sector that depends on reliable water access has a compelling reason to act now rather than wait for the public supply system to recover.

Commercial and Hospitality Water Storage in Mauritius

Mauritius’s tourism sector serves visitors who pay premium rates and expect uninterrupted amenity. A resort in Grand Baie or Flic en Flac that cannot guarantee water for showers, pools and restaurants during CWA rationing risks its TripAdvisor rating and its repeat booking rates.

Hotels and resorts across the island now treat private water storage tanks as essential infrastructure rather than optional backup.

African Tanks supplies large galvanized and bolted steel tanks configured for hospitality use, with food-grade coatings for potable water and custom sizing to match each property’s daily consumption and site footprint.

Sugar and Agricultural Water Storage in Mauritius

Sugar cane remains Mauritius’s most significant agricultural crop by volume, and its cultivation demands reliable water through the dry season.

During the 1998 drought – still the country’s benchmark water emergency – the sugar industry lost USD 160 million compared to the previous season’s revenues.

The 2025 crisis has brought conditions dangerously close to that level. Sugar estate operators who install large steel or bolted irrigation storage tanks protect their crop investment and stabilise their operations regardless of CWA allocation.

Beyond sugar, food crop production – particularly potatoes and pumpkins – has grown rapidly and suffers directly from dry-season water scarcity.

These growers need smaller but reliable storage: typically 20,000 to 200,000 litres of galvanized tank capacity that fills during the wet season and sustains irrigation through October, November and December.

What size tank does a sugar cane farm in Mauritius need?

A sugar cane estate in Mauritius needs irrigation storage scaled to its cultivated area and the length of the October-December dry season. A 50-hectare estate irrigating at standard rates needs at least 200,000 to 500,000 litres of reserve storage to maintain crop health through a six-to-eight-week dry period without CWA allocation.

Larger estates operating through the full three-month dry season need 500,000 litres and above. African Tanks calculates exact requirements based on your estate size, crop type and CWA allocation. Contact us for a farm-specific sizing consultation.

Residential Water Storage in Mauritius

Private water storage is already common in Mauritius – CWA’s own advisories recommend domestic tanks as the primary individual response to rationing.

The 2025 crisis has made this recommendation urgent. Households across the island now install galvanized tanks sized to their daily consumption and their specific CWA supply schedule.

For a family of four in Port Louis on a twelve-hour supply window, a 20,000 to 30,000 litre tank provides comfortable coverage.

For a household in the south or east on a three-hour daily window, the right size is 50,000 to 100,000 litres. African Tanks helps every buyer match their tank to their actual situation.

Industrial Water Storage in Mauritius

Manufacturing facilities, agro-processing plants and industrial buyers across Mauritius face the same challenge as hotels: their operations cannot pause for CWA rationing. Process water for manufacturing lines, cooling systems and sanitation needs to flow continuously.

Large steel or bolted tanks holding 500,000 litres and above give industrial buyers the reserve they need to maintain full production through extended restriction periods.

African Tanks supplies tanks configured for industrial process water, including non-potable storage without the food-grade liner requirement, at a lower cost per litre for buyers who do not need potable-grade storage.

How long do steel water tanks last in Mauritius’s coastal climate?

A well-maintained galvanized or coated steel tank from African Tanks lasts 20-30 years in Mauritius’s tropical coastal climate.

The zinc galvanizing layer actively resists the salt-air corrosion that affects all near-coastal locations on the island, while the base steel handles the thermal cycling between cyclone-season humidity and dry-season heat.

Plastic tanks in comparable conditions typically fail structurally within 10-15 years through UV degradation and heat cycling. Over a 25-year project period, a steel tank costs substantially less per year than a plastic tank replaced once or twice in the same timeframe.

Delivery and Installation of Water Tanks in Mauritius

African Tanks manufactures all tanks in South Africa and ships them to Mauritius by container through Port Louis. Smaller galvanized and sectional tanks ship as complete units or pre-assembled components that reach the island in standard container loads.

Larger bolted systems ship as flat-packed modular panels, making them straightforward to transport to any site on the island – including constrained resort sites, hillside properties and sugar estate locations that cranes cannot easily access.

Once panels arrive on-site, your ground team assembles the tank using basic hand tools. No crane, no welder and no specialist contractor are needed.

African Tanks provides step-by-step installation documentation and remote guidance for every bolted and galvanized system we supply. Teams in Mauritius have successfully assembled our tanks on constrained sites and rural estate locations using this documentation alone.

After installation, African Tanks provides after-sales support for the full working life of your tank. Our team is available for technical questions, coating inspection guidance, maintenance schedules and capacity upgrade planning as Mauritius’s water situation continues to evolve.

How to Choose the Right Water Tank Size in Mauritius

Choosing the right tank size for Mauritius starts with two numbers: your daily water consumption at peak use, and the maximum number of hours or days you currently go without CWA supply.

Multiply your peak daily consumption by the longest gap you experience – that is your minimum tank size. Then add 20 to 30% as a buffer for extended dry spells or cyclone-season disruption to the CWA network. Undersizing is the most common and most expensive mistake Mauritius buyers make.

For a household of four in Port Louis on a twelve-hour CWA window, the calculation typically produces a minimum tank size of 15,000 to 25,000 litres.

For a household in the south or east on three hours daily, the minimum rises to 40,000 to 80,000 litres. Small guesthouses and boutique hotels serving ten to twenty rooms need 50,000 to 150,000 litres of reserve.

Large resorts serving 200 or more guests need 200,000 to 1,000,000 litres depending on amenity mix and how many days of autonomous supply the operator wants to hold.

Sugar estate and agricultural sizing depends on irrigated area and crop type – African Tanks provides specific calculations for farm buyers. Industrial buyers should base sizing on daily process water consumption at full production, multiplied by the longest CWA outage they can recall.

Contact African Tanks for a free sizing consultation – our team guides every buyer through this calculation before they commit to an order.

2026 Buyer Considerations – Water Storage Tanks in Mauritius

Consideration	What to think about
CWA rationing hours per day	Size your tank based on supply hours, as Port Louis gets 4–12 hours and some areas only 3 hours daily
Potable vs non-potable use	Drinking water requires food-grade coatings, so confirm this before ordering
Cyclone-season vs dry-season needs	Cyclones fill tanks quickly, but dry months require stored reserves
Coastal humidity and salt air	Coastal conditions accelerate corrosion, so galvanised steel is essential
Site access and footprint	Constrained sites need modular or sectional tanks, as access is often limited
Expansion plans	Oversize by 20–30%, because future expansion is more expensive
Budget vs lifespan	Steel lasts decades longer, while plastic often needs replacement
Water trucking as a comparison	Trucking costs rise during shortages, so tanks reduce long-term expenses

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy water storage tanks in Mauritius?

African Tanks supplies water storage tanks in Mauritius directly from South Africa, shipping through Port Louis to locations across the island. As a result, buyers in urban areas, resort zones, and inland estates can access reliable delivery and installation guidance. Contact African Tanks with your location, required capacity, and water source details to receive a full quote and logistics plan.

How much does a water storage tank cost in Mauritius?

The cost of water storage tanks in Mauritius depends on tank type, capacity, and delivery logistics. Smaller galvanized tanks between 10,000 and 50,000 litres are typically used for household backup, while larger bolted or steel systems require higher upfront investment. However, steel tanks last 20–30 years, making them more cost-effective over time compared to plastic alternatives.

What size water tank do I need during CWA rationing in Mauritius?

Tank size depends on your daily usage and CWA supply hours. A household of four in Port Louis receiving 4–12 hours of water typically needs 20,000 to 30,000 litres. In contrast, households in the south and east with only three hours of supply should consider 50,000 to 100,000 litres to maintain a comfortable reserve. African Tanks provides sizing guidance based on your actual consumption and supply schedule.

Are galvanized water tanks safe for drinking water in Mauritius?

Yes. Galvanized tanks use food-grade coatings and internal liners that maintain water quality during storage. The zinc coating protects the exterior from coastal humidity, while the interior lining ensures hygienic potable storage. However, where water quality is uncertain, filtration or treatment before consumption is recommended.

How long do steel water tanks last in Mauritius?

Steel water tanks typically last 20 to 30 years in Mauritius’s tropical coastal climate. Because galvanized steel resists salt-air corrosion and UV exposure, it performs significantly better than plastic tanks, which often fail within 10–15 years under similar conditions.

Can I harvest cyclone-season rainfall with a water tank in Mauritius?

Yes, and this is one of the most effective strategies for water security. During cyclone season, heavy rainfall can quickly fill large tanks. As a result, stored rainwater can be used during the October–December dry period when CWA supply is most restricted. Proper inlet design and filtration improve system performance.

What type of water tanks do hotels and resorts use in Mauritius?

Hotels and resorts typically install large galvanized or bolted steel water tanks, often exceeding 200,000 litres, to maintain operations during CWA outages. In addition, sectional tanks are used for specific buildings or zones. This combination ensures uninterrupted supply for guest services, pools, and operations.

What are galvanized water tanks made of?

Galvanized tanks are constructed from structural steel coated with zinc through a hot-dip process. As a result, the coating forms a protective barrier against corrosion. Interior surfaces include food-grade liners for potable use, ensuring both durability and water safety in Mauritius’s coastal environment.

Does African Tanks deliver to all areas of Mauritius?

Yes. African Tanks delivers water storage tanks in Mauritius island-wide via Port Louis. Smaller tanks are transported by truck, while larger bolted systems ship as flat-pack panels for easier delivery to constrained or remote sites.

Can I expand a water tank later if demand increases?

Yes. Bolted water tanks use a modular panel design, allowing capacity expansion without replacing the entire structure. Therefore, buyers can increase storage as water demand grows or supply conditions worsen.

Does African Tanks provide after-sales support in Mauritius?

Yes. African Tanks provides installation guidance, maintenance advice, and technical support after delivery. As a result, buyers can operate and maintain their systems effectively without requiring on-site specialists for routine tasks.

How serious is the water crisis in Mauritius in 2026?

The water crisis is severe. Reservoir levels dropped to 41% in 2025, triggering strict rationing. At the same time, declining rainfall and system losses have reduced supply reliability. As a result, water storage tanks in Mauritius have become essential for households and businesses.

What size tank do I need to become independent of CWA supply?

Full independence requires storing total daily consumption over your target period. For example, a household using 600 litres per day needs at least 4,200 litres for 7 days, but practical systems start at 20,000 litres to provide a realistic buffer. Larger properties require significantly more capacity.

Are steel tanks better than plastic in Mauritius?

Yes. Steel tanks last longer and perform better under UV exposure and temperature fluctuations. In contrast, plastic tanks degrade faster and often require replacement within 10–15 years. Therefore, steel offers better long-term value.

How do water storage tanks support agriculture and tourism in Mauritius?

Water tanks ensure reliable supply for irrigation and operations. As a result, sugar farms maintain yields during dry periods, and resorts maintain service quality during CWA restrictions. In both sectors, storage protects revenue and operational continuity.
